Welcome to the Centre for Human Brain Health Wiki

The Centre for Human Brain Health (CHBH) is a leading interdisciplinary brain research facility, established with the mission of understanding the fundamental mechanisms of the human brain. At the CHBH we are answering questions such as what makes a brain healthy, and how to prevent & reverse damage.

This site provides technical information for the Centre for Human Brain Health. This front page and some collaborations are public facing.

For access to the CHBH building, you will need to submit a request for CHBH Swipe Access and Mandatory Training.

Collaborations (Public Facing)

FLUX pipeline, a project to provide a standard pipeline for basic MEG research.

Experimental Modalities

To schedule time for the below CHBH modalities; use Calpendo, the CHBH Booking System. Generally you will need an active project to do so. Directions on how to book are currently adjusted for COVID special requirements.

  • Exercise and Brain Stimulation Exercise Laboratory facilitates studies examining acute and longer term effects of exercise on brain health. Housed with the Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation laboratory; which features non-invasive Trans-cranial Magnetic (TMS) and Electrical (TES) brain Stimulation apparatus.
  • EEG Electroencephalography (EEG) laboratories. High-performance EEG laboratories for accurate timing and application of auditory and visual stimulation (concurrently or separately). One lan in the CHBH, the other close at hand in 52PR.
  • fNIRS Functional Near Infrared (fNIRS) laboratory, housing the Imagent (v2) system that allows non-invasive functional imaging of the brain.
  • MEG Magnetoencephalography (MEG) laboratory, which allows for continuous recordings of ongoing brain activity with a millisecond time resolution. Advanced analysis tools identify where in the brain the measured electrophysiological activity is generated.
  • MRI Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) laboratory, providing a range of options for stimulus delivery, and physiological & behavioural recordings.
  • OPM Optically Pumped Magnetometer (OPM) laboratory, where we are developing new sensors to be used for magnetoencephalography (MEG) using quantum technology.
  • Mock MRI The Mock Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Mock MRI) laboratory permits participants to become accustomed to the MRI scanner in a full-sized mock installation, with realistic audio.
  • Cubicles Stimulus PCs from the Common Experimental Platform are used throughout Modalities and in Experimental Cubicles. Allowing paradigms to be tested without booking a full Modality suite.
  • Online Studies How to run online studies using Sona / RPS, Prolific, PsychoPy/Pavlovia, Qualtrics & Gorilla. RECENTLY UPDATED

PBIC and Remote Computing

Please visit the Parallel Brain Imaging Cluster Page for information about getting started with CHBH's advanced computational resources. Due to the pandemic, we have implemented a remote access system that allows CHBH staff to securely connect to their local machines. - Please contact CHBH Help <chbh-help@contacts.bham.ac.uk>.

Please visit this page for network topology; Network Diagrams.

Please visit BlueBEAR/CaStLeS for information about getting started with UoB's computational resources.
